I am pleased and proud to have presented this show of my media art works at the BACC Bangkok Art and Culture Center, in Thailand.
Curated by my friend, critic and teacher, Stephen Sarrazin, this show is the biggest, richest and most intense exhibition I’ve done to date. For this show, I created two new works, showcased four recent pieces, added to an ongoing series, and remade a work from 1982 - originally shown at the Whitney Musuem.
"Shifting Horizons" had over 35,000 visitors during the run, and generated positive press for this bastion of free speech in Thailand.
John Sanborn was a key member of the second wave of American video artists that included Bill Viola, Gary Hill, Dara Birnbaum, and Tony Oursler. And though much of his early works were shown in celebrated institutions, from the Whitney and MOMA in NYC, to the Pompidou Center in Paris, his career embraced a full media journey that would take him inside broadcast television, to Hollywood and to Silicon Valley. All the while maintaining a presence in the art world through installations and collaborative projects with composers and choreographers.
2015 marked the return of Sanborn as a figure to be reckoned with, and whos creative history set a series of signposts for the 21st century chronology, how an artists who wandered in an out of corporate worlds, makes his way back to the fold.
This exhibition marks the manner of his return, looking to music, the foundation, the pattern for his distinctive use of media formalism, it conjures up issues of myth and reinvention, as media remain an ever-changing medium; finally it acknowledges Sanborn’s role in performance and performative collaborations, settling the bond between him and his mentor, Nam June Paik.
