With Anchovies (immersive) | John Sanborn

Juxtaposed against the ceaseless grind of everyday life, are the uncertainties that surprise, delight, horrify and kill us. You know what I’m talking about. Days after days of predictable episodes become routines washing over us as bright noise. Suddenly, without cause or question, we’re met by disruptions that thump us, and shatter our calm.

Since we are incapable of expecting the unexpected, rationality escapes our control, and an impenetrable cloak of chaos wraps us up, tight. We cannot distinguish what is normal, the theme or the variation. Leaving us with the unanswerable question, “what’s next?”

Woven into decades of repetition are the ambiguous, yet inevitable quirks that make existence such a wild ride. Just beyond “what’s for dinner?”, lurk cosmic tripping points, where we glimpse our purpose, and are given hints as to the absurdity of life. Things like: “will he propose?”, “what is this?”, “what did you just say?”, “what just happened?”, “how did we get here?”, and the mythic, “no way!”.

These interruptions are poetic affirmations of how shockingly surreal life can be, and how, beyond our solipsistic frame of reference, lies a trove of shocks, astonishments, disturbances and continuous spiritual turbulence.

When asked “what do you want?” I inevitably ask for anchovies. The smoky, salty, sturdy fish taste adds a enigmatic zing to whatever I am eating. So. Why not add anchovies to everything? Art, song, romance, and pain - all taste better with anchovies.

Like picking a seed from between your teeth, comprehension has been transfigured from dignified philosophy to watchful maintenance. We attempt to ignore that which fuses what we know, and what it is impossible to understand. But sure enough, the shock of uncertainty returns.

With Anchovies is an exploratory exploitation that fragments our illusion of normality, using an insistent questioning of how “real” our lives seem, while in fact they are bat shit crazy.

NO, Thank You (immersive) | John Sanborn

NO_ Thank You title Card.jpg

The churn of decades, wrestling with mechanics, process and fortune, takes its toll. It’s not just a culmination thing, but a daily grind made incessantly worse by our social structures, and the ever-present pressure to be “successful”. Each nod to the incorrect opens the door to a fear of total failure, which of course we fear – as this is our driving emotional response to everything.

To which my response is NO, Thank You – a courteous way of saying fuck off – I am just so tired of being ignored, jostling for recognition and endlessly (and I mean every single moment of every single day) seeking validation. When, in fact, every day is beautiful, because I am breathing.

We cannot ignore the lassitude, physics and detritus of being alive, but we sure can confront these issues head on, and clean the studio, adjust our focus and barge ahead. Willful ignorance, not of contextual circumstances but of causation, is a simple method of just getting on with it.

NO, Thank You remixes phobias, narration and obsessions – and turns them inside out. A curiosity for how we fetishize the mundane allows us to see more clearly a path forward – to what destination is never certain, but at least we’re making good time as we go.

If we needed a word, it would be Encephalomyelitis – as we review our actions, adjust our gaze, and make a list.

I’m Tired of money, bad news, the weather, culture wars, my teeth, time, Limerence, stories, talking, reality, doctors, melting, AI threats, sleeping, barking, death, regrets, violence and being tired.

I am tired of being. And yet, I am.
